Following technical checks on his SEAT León Tdi car, Tiago Monteiro was excluded from the 6th round of the season that took place at Marrakech on May 3rd.
Following a protest filed by BMW Team Germany, the FIA technical delegate analysed the data logged by the ECU of four different SEAT Sport cars: Monteiro’s, Yvan Muller’s, Gabriele Tarquini’s and Jordi Gené’s.
The respect of the limit on the supercharged air pressure imposed by the FIA Touring Car Bureau (decision WTCC_24.02.2009_5) was checked, taking into account the 0.4 bar tolerance. The limit was not exceeded by three of the cars, while the ECU of Monteiro’s car recorded two peaks above the limit.
Therefore the Stewards decided to exclude the Portuguese from the second race, in which he classified seventh. His exclusion means that independent drivers Franz Engstler and Tom Coronel are promoted to seventh and eighth respectively.

Another local driver will make the field for the WTCC meeting in Pau: Eric Cayrolle who will be at the wheel of SUNRED Engineering’s third SEAT León car alongside the team’s regulars Tom Coronel and Tom Boardman. The latter rejoins after skipping the previous event at Marrakech.
Born in Pau 46 years ago, Cayrolle boasts an impressive CV in touring car competitions as he claimed three consecutive French Super Touring titles between 1996 and 1998, always at the wheel of BMW cars. Later he competed in the FIA European Touring Car Championship from 2001 to 2003, before switching to GT racing in recent years.
On many occasions Cayrolle has shared his GT cars with fellow townsman Laurent Cazenave, who will also race in the WTCC at Pau with a Wiechers-Sport’s BMW.

Cela n'a échappé à personne, aucune BMW n'a gagné aucune des 6 premières courses du WTCC cette saison !

Mario Theissen évoque l'autorisation qu'avait Seat diesel à avoir une pression de turbo supérieure à 2.5 bars... sans que ses concurrents en soient informés.

Bref, pour Theissen, la FIA n'a pas choisi l'équité. Pire, il évoque un retrait complet de BMW en compétition officielle... Choix sportif ou mesure de crise ?

Le patron de BMW Motorsport admet qu'un soutien à des clients privés serait une hypothèse:

"La situation actuelle en WTCC est intenable. Nous sommes en train de reconsidérer notre implication dans cette discipline.

Nous avons toujours participé aux courses de supertourisme, et nous continuerons, d'une forme ou d'une autre.

Seat n'est pas responsable de cette situation, mais la FIA, si. Des décisions sont prises avant et pendant la course, sans que nous en soyons informés. Il a du y avoir des réclamations pour que ces problèmes apparaissent au grand jour.

Nous réfléchissons à d'autres disciplines. Si un engagement en tant que constructeur n'est plus intéressante, nous pourrions nous contenter d'offrir un support à des écuries clientes."

Décidément, que ce soit en F1, en WTCC ou en Rallye, la FIA n'est pas très populaire en ce moment !

Espérons que BMW ne quitte pas subitement ce championnat, qui reste parmi les plus passionnants qui soient...

While the pressure is hard on the Russian manufacturer, the identity of the new driver is going to be kept a secret a while longer.

"There is contact but nobody from Lada Sport is going to reveal the name of the driver that is going to join us in Portugal," said van Lagen.

The so far secret driver has been signed already and is going to drive the new Priora model for the rest of the season. Van Lagen and team mate Kirill Ladygin are going have to wait until Oschersleben before getting the new Priora.

Team boss and driver Viktor Shapovalov on the other hand is going to retire after the race at Brno.

While Thompson has been reported on many sites as the most likely choice for Lada, the Brit has a busy schedule racing in both the British Touring Car Championship and the Danish Touring Car Championship.

Duncan Huisman has also been linked to the drive but denies the rumors.

"I am not going to drive for Lada in WTCC, as far as I know. But I would like to return to the WTCC and I think Lada are going to be competitive in the near future," said Huisman to TouringCarTimes.com.

Giovanardi has also been mentioned, but seems to be unlikely due to his hard program with Vauxhall in BTCC.

While Corthals takes part in the Belgian Touring Car Series, driving a SEAT, it is not unlikely that he could be up for the drive.

Les 11e et 12e manches du championnat WTCC se déroulent ce week-end à Brno en République tchèque, bastion des BMW depuis des années. L'an passé, l'Italien Alessandro Zanardi avait été irrésistible et seul Gabriele Tarquini l'avait privé du doublé. Cette année encore, Zanardi sera l'un des favoris.

L'année dernière, Brno avait été le théâtre de l'un des plus beaux duels de la saison, lors de la course 2, entre Alessandro Zanardi et Gabriele Tarquini. Le pilote Seat avait réussi héroïquement à résister aux assauts de son compatriote de BMW. Alors qu'Augusto Farfus a relancé la saison de BMW en s'imposant dans la course 2 à Valence, l'écurie allemande arrive en terrain conquis, en République tchèque. Depuis la venue du WTCC à Brno en 2006, seuls Robert Huff (Chevrolet, 2006 course 2) et Gabriele Tarquini (Seat Leon, 2008 course 2) ont réussi à surpasser les BMW.

Parmi les favoris, Alessandro Zanardi aura une belle carte à jouer puisqu'il est le seul parmi les ténors dont la voiture ne sera pas lestée au départ, A l'inverse, toutes les autres BMW 320si, les Chevrolet Cruze LT et les Seat Leon TDI embarqueront un surpoids de 40 kilogrammes. Fort de sa victoire lors de la course 1 à Valence, Yvan Muller (Seat) aura fort à faire pour conserver sa place de leader au général. Le champion du monde en titre ne compte que trois points d'avance sur Augusto Farfus avant le rendez-vous tchèque. Chez les constructeurs, BMW est revenu à 16 points de l'écurie espagnole.

Mais les pilotes Seat n'ont pas eu le temps de se refroidir depuis Valence. Tiago Monteiro et Tom Coronel ont participé aux 24 Heures du Mans, le premier au volant dune Oreca, le second sur une Spyker. De son côté, Jordi Gené a rejoint Jacques Villeneuve et Pierre-Yves Corthals pour participer aux 12 Heures de Spa dans le championnat belge des voitures de tourisme. A Brno, vous risquez de voir double à un moment, en regardant les Coronel. Rassurez-vous, c'est normal ! Tim Coronel, le frère jumeau de Tom, effectuera à Brno ses débuts en WTCC au volant d'une Seat Leon essence, pour le récompenser de ses résultats en Seat Leon Eurocup.

Wednesday in Paris the FIA World Motor Sport Council approved the calendar for the 2010 World Touring Car Championship.
The series will visit two new venues: Zolder and Algarve. The former, that hosted one meeting of the FIA European Touring Car Championship back in 2001, replaces the French round of Pau and will mark WTCC’s return to Belgium after its only visit (at Spa in 2005). As for the new Portuguese racetrack, it will receive the championship for the first time, stepping in for Porto.
Other changes compared to the current season are the dates swapped between Italy and Spain (the name of the Italian venue that will host the first European event will be communicated soon) and the postponement of the Czech event to August 1st.
The structure of the season remains the same, with the two opening events in Brazil and Mexico, followed by Marrakech, seven meetings in Europe and the final trip to the Far East (Japan and Macau).

Touring car ace James Thompson returns to the FIA WTCC joining the LADA Sport team.
Yesterday at Zolder, the 35-year old Englishman had his first test in the brand new LADA Priora he will drive in Porto next week. Thompson will replace team principal and driver Viktor Shapovalov in four of the remaining six events: Porto, Brands Hatch, Okayama and Macau, missing Oschersleben and Imola due to previous commitments. His team-mates Jaap van Lagen and Kirill Ladygin will also switch from the current LADA 110 to the new Priora from the meeting in Oschersleben on September 6th.
Thompson boasts an outstanding WTCC record, having raced for Alfa Romeo, SEAT and Honda claiming 4 victories and 12 other podium results; in 2007 he classified third in the drivers’ championship. He has started the current season competing in the Danish and the British Touring Car Championships, achieving four wins so far.
“I’m very excited to be back in the WTCC and I feel very privileged that LADA has asked me to be the first person to race their new car,” said Thompson. “It’s a great challenge to be involved in a new project like this from the beginning and I am looking forward to it very much.”

PUYO IS SEAT CUP WINNER FOR PORTO

Diego Puyo has won participation in the next World Touring Car Championship races at Porto by winning the SEAT León Eurocup’s second event last Sunday at Brno.
On the Czech racetrack the 25 year-old Spaniard completed the first race in fifth position and won the second one, climbing on top of the standings on equal point with Massimiliano Pedalà from Italy.
Thanks to these results, Puyo will take the wheel of SUNRED Engineering’s third SEAT León at Porto, succeeding Tim Coronel who successfully drove it at Brno. “I’m really excited, because my dream is to take part in the whole WTCC season next year. I know that is going to be difficult, and this is why I don’t have any goal in mind other than gaining experience. I have the advantage to know the SUNRED team very well, as they run my car in the Eurocup,” said Puyo.

Volvo a par le passé marqué les esprits des fans de Supertourisme en engageant des Break 850 dans le réputé BTCC au milieu des années 90. Elle remportera même le championnat en 1998 avec une S40 aux mains de Rickard Rydell. Si vous avez suivi mon conseil d'hier et vous êtes porté acquéreur de la panoplie Green Racing Volvo, sachez que vous pourrez l'utiliser à bon escient lors de la manche anglaise du WTCC dans laquelle Volvo vient d'annoncer qu'elle engageait 2 autos qui iront se frotter aux Seat, BMW et autres Chevrolet.

Actuellement engagée en championnat suédois, la Green C30 DRIVe fonctionnant au bioéthanol va faire une pige à Brands Hatch dans le championnat du monde grâce à l'aide de Volvo UK. L'épreuve aura lieu les 18 et 19 juillet prochain et, contrairement à l'an dernier, ce sont 2 C30 qui seront engagées.

Elles seront dévolues aux pilotes habituels Robert Dahlgren et Tommy Rustad et arboreront une livrée inédite Volvo Genuine Parts et Polestar Performance.

Et n'oubliez pas vos pronos

franchement ca commence a devenir n'importe quoi la wtcc, faudrait vraiment qu'ils soit fixe sur les regles des strategies d'equipe car sinon ca n'a aucun interet.

Avant qu’un constructeur japonais ne se décide à rejoindre les rangs du championnat du monde des voitures de tourisme, il existera peut-être une manche disputée aux Etats-Unis.

En effet, les organisateurs prévoient un déplacement outre-Atlantique pour l’année 2011. Une déclaration de Marcello Lotti à Motorsport Total exprime en tout cas clairement le souhait du WTCC de s’implanter dans le Sud-Ouest des Etats-Unis, une région semble-t-il très intéressante pour les constructeurs déjà impliqués dans le championnat.

Plusieurs hypothèses de circuits peuvent êtres avancées. Mentionnons Laguna Seca, Phoenix et Homestead Miami Speedway.

En cette même année 2011, le WTCC pourrait également débarquer en Russie.

Alors 2011, année de l’internationalisation du WTCC ? Pas exactement. Disons plutôt 2011 pourrait marquer une nouvelle étape dans l’extension géographique de d’un championnat déjà présent au Japon, au Maroc…

Oreca, la "petite" entreprise de Hugues de Chaunac était un des bras armé de Seat en WTCC qui engageait 2 autos pour Yvan Muller et Tiago Monteiro. D'ailleurs, le bras était si bien armé que Yvan Muller devenait l'an dernier champion du monde de la discipline au volant d'une Seat Leon TDi.

Mais l'idylle n'ira pas plus loin puisque le patron en personne a déclaré à Autosport que le partenariat cessait après la dernière course de la saison à Macau.

"Je peux confirmer que nous arrêtons avec Seat, c'est sûr à 100%. Je pense qu'ils partiront en 2010 sur les bases d'un plus petit engagement."

De son côté Jaime Puig a démenti une réduction de l'effort de Seat en 2010 et précisé que la décision d'Oreca était motivé par les changements dans l'équivalence règlementaire entre les diesel et les essence annoncée pour l'an prochain. Puig s'est contenté de dire :

"Nous attendons de savoir qu'elles seront les règles exactes et ensuite nous déciderons."

Oreca rebondira où (ou avec qui) l'année prochaine ? La question est posée.

Donc plus de Muller en WTCC ?

Ca ne veut rien dire. Oreca peut très bien aller voir ailleurs pour un autre constructeur, et Muller suivre, ou alors Muller peut très bien rester chez Seat, dans l'autre structure. Ou tout simplement être transferé dans une autre équipe
A moins qu'il décide de lui même de se lancer dans une autre discipline, auquel cas il ne sera plus en WTCC, c'est sûr ^^

Formula Master driver Vladimir Arabadzhiev spends a day testing with the Chevrolet WTCC team at Pembrey
Bulgarian racer Vladimir Arabadzhiev has enjoyed his first taste of the World Touring Car Championship machinery after spending a day with the factory Chevrolet team at Pembrey.

Arabadzhiev was chosen by the team to test the Cruze - alongside regular driver Rob Huff - as a reward for his performance in International Formula Master this season.

As part of the test, Arabadzhiev was given the chance to complete both a qualifying run and a race outing of ten laps,

"To spend a day working with a WTCC works team has been a great opportunity for me,” he said. “It doesn't happen often that young formulae drivers are given a chance to explore other motorsports top disciplines, like touring cars, in such a professional environment.

"It was a very interesting experience, as it was quite unusual to drive a front wheel drive race car for the first time. The team was very helpful to get me comfortable in the car and build my confidence before giving me a new set of tyres to do a qualifying run before a ten-lap race run. Rob Huff was available to give me some tips regarding his car and this proved useful to improve my lap times. I wish to thank Chevrolet and IFM for giving me this opportunity."

Although no official times were recorded, Arabadzhiev is said to have set qualifying times within seven tenths of experienced WTCC driver Huff, whilst the Bulgarian's race run saw him set a best lap just three tenths behind Huff.

"One of the good things about the WTCC sharing racing weekends with the International Formula Master Series is the possibility to cooperate and to organise test sessions with their drivers, which allow us to look at young talents coming from single-seaters and allow a new generation of drivers to look for opportunities in the touring car scene," Chevrolet Europe motorsport manager Eric Neve said.

"We are delighted to have Vladimir Arabadzhiev, a promising driver from one of the emerging European countries in motorsports, as the first IFM driver testing a Chevrolet and we are very satisfied with the extremely professional job he did during the test day."

Arabdzhiev a l'air plutôt courtisé. GP2, WTCC, il a le choix du programme ...

En tout cas avec un nom comme le sien, ça ne passe pas inaperçu.

João Paulo Lima de Oliveira will join SUNRED Engineering for the next WTCC event in Okayama.
The 28-year-old Brazilian is a favourite of Japanese motorsport fans, being a regular in the local championships since 2004.
Lima de Oliveira boasts and outstanding racing CV and vast international experience. After claiming the South American Formula 3 title in the Scholarship class at the age of 18, he moved to Europe to win the German F3 championship in 2003. The year after he settled in Japan, where he collected another F3 title in 2005.
From 2006 he’s taking part in both the Japanese Super GT and Formula Nippon championships, establishing himself as one of the fastest and consistent drivers. He claimed Super GT race wins sharing the wheel of Nissan Z and GT-R cars with Seiji Ara. The two of them will find themselves on opposite sides in the WTCC, as Ara will drive a Wiechers-Sport BMW.
